Why mainstream oral care products don't work for everyone

For many people, brushing their teeth is automatic. You squeeze the toothpaste, brush, rinse and move on. For a lot of families though, brushing just isn't that simple. Parents tell us all the time that they've tried everything: different toothpastes, different flavours, different routines, yet brushing still ends in stress and/or refusal.
Some commonly shared issues include: a child says toothpaste is 'too spicy' even when it's meant to be mild; they can't tolerate the foam or they won't keep it in their mouth long enough to brush properly, the toothpaste makes them gag and they become upset and overwhelmed. These struggles are often framed as behaviour. Often though, the issue isn't behavioural, it's sensory.
Most mainstream oral care products are designed around one idea of what brushing should feel like: strong mint, lots of foam and an intense 'fresh' sensation. That works for many people, but not for everyone. Some children and adults experience taste and sensation far more intensely. What feels fresh to one person can feel burning or overwhelming to another. Foam can feel uncomfortable. Strong flavours can linger and become impossible to ignore. When brushing feels like this twice a day, avoiding it is a completely natural response.
This is especially common among neurodivergent children, but it isn't limited to them. Sensory sensitivity exists on a spectrum and can affect people of all ages, including those in care settings or during illness.
When oral care is refused, the response is often to push harder. Charts, rewards or more pressure. But that rarely changes how the experience actually feels. It just adds more stress to something that's already difficult.
Many brands describe their toothpaste as "gentle". But gentleness isn't only about ingredients, it's about experience. A toothpaste can be safe, effective and dentist approved and still feel intolerable if the flavour is strong or the foam is heavy. Oral care only works if it's tolerated. This is where mainstream oral care often falls short. It assume one version of "normal" and expects everyone to adapt to it. But not everyone can and they shouldn't have to.
For some families, things only start to change when they stop trying to fix the routine and start changing the product. That's why we created Buddies sensory toothpaste. It's for children and adults who find strong mint, foam or intense flavours overwhelming. It's designed to support calmer brushing without compromising on effective cleaning.
At BuddiesForLife, we believe oral care should feel calm, gentle and tolerable, not overwhelming. Because when brushing feels easier, everything around it does too.
